Description

This is the view of the Victoria Glacier that I promised you two nights ago. This photo was taken from the front lawn of the 550 room Chateau Lake Louise and looking across the emerald green Lake Louise. Lake Louise has a surface area of 0.31 square miles (0.8 km2). Lake Louise was created by the Victoria Glacier back in the last ice age about 10,000 to 20,000 years ago. The glacier actually consists of two parts, a mountain glacier draped over the upper slopes of Mt Victoria, and a valley glacier in the center of the photograph, where the two tree lines merge in the lower center of this photo. The valley glacier does not look like many photos of glaciers because it is covered with gray debris (rocks having fallen onto it during its journey through the valley). The snowfields half way up the steep sides of Mt Victoria (in the top of this photos background) contribute to the rock debris falling onto the glacier, thus making the ice of the glacier all but invisible. The top half of Mt Victoria is hidden by the low clouds. Info from multiple web sites. Photo taken with my old Pentax film camera in August 1988 and scanned. Zoom will give you better detail. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

I think that Chateau was built just after that last ice age too, LOL! And they've been raising their prices every year since then. Nice shot Dana and an iconic place in the Canadian Rockies and in Alberta. Now you can actually go swimming in there, but only if you are a hardy sort of soul!

A truly beautiful photo, Dana - the blues & greens are otherworldly. I stayed at the Chateau Lake Louise many years ago & have visited that area (including Banff & Jasper) in both summer & winter & this brings back some very fond memories of that spectacular country...
