I wanted to do at least one bird painting tonight. You've captured a Japanese feeling here, in the bold big moon (or sun), the bold placement of the herons against it, the strands of grass at the bottom (as linear contrast), even the very stylized rendering of the water into little grooves, little 'ridges': very graphic, very much of a 'print' feel, to my eyes. But that's only the beginning. You've articulated the feathers almost as you do your flowers, with exquisite lines and flows; your color-scheme---with those peaches again---mixed with light almost silver-tinged blues, etc, is filled with those 'transient' hues-made-permanent. You have a pink cloud crossing the orb---on the left, midway up the painting---which also feels Japanese in the way Japanese artists used color-swaths as pure design. But it's also you, because of the delicate inward feeling of the hue. And some beautiful blues around the top edges...When you're not echoing and suggesting complex spirit-activity in your backgrounds, they become simpler morphs of color; and the simplicity is very touching. A simple piece for all its detail, with a set of singular gestures that cross and cleave the space; and with great grace and beauty, befitting the heron itself. A delicate and beautiful vision.
