Description

Saturn-2B or Saturn to be? That is the question for anyone interested. The answer of course, the Saturn shown here is a design that was never built. It was based on a study done at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) on a Saturn-V, where four Titan SRBs replace the Saturn-S1C first stage. The SRBs come from a Titan-IIIC and since I built all my realism based models to tight scale tolerances, the SRBs and their little Thrust Vector Control (TVC) cylinders (Orange and white) are sized consistent with the Saturn-V second stage they are mounted to. The upper portion is a skylab type space station topped with the white payload fairing. I built the rockets, pad, mobile homes, towers, platforms and the milkstool supporting the Saturn-2B. I call it the Saturn-2B for this upload. I don't recall the actual MSFC designator. This configuration may not have been adequate to place an 85 ton Skylab into low orbit. OTOH, the Skylab Saturn-V was slightly underutilized when placing the same tonnage to low orbit back in 73. The car and tree models came from an old CD rom I had. This scene was set up for my Skylab launch scene back in 1995 or thereabouts. Then I did this setup in 2011. At the time I did the original scene, I used mobile homes to substitute for the pad personnel box cars that are normally at the pad. As a hobbyist, the nice thing is not being on a schedule. The downside is that scenes like this take two decades to finish because you spend an hour one decade, another hour the next and so on.
