Description

About ten years ago when the Athens Metro was to be extended they discovered these Roman Baths in this location scheduled to be a ventilation shaft along Amelias Avenue east of the Arch of Hadrian. This area, until Hadrian, lay outside the fortified city of Athens. The baths continue eastward inside the National Gardens and westward along Amelias Avenue and include a number of chambers, two furnaces, a well, ventilation shafts to allow the circulation of steam, heated walls etc. These baths were established after the Herulian raids at the end of the 3rd or early in the 4th century AD and later destroyed, but repaired and enlarged during the 5th-6th century AD. In later years the baths were apparently used as a refuge or martyr's memorial in the early Christian years. In Byzantine times clay silos for storing cereals were sunk into the rooms of the bath-house section of the archaeological site. This picture was taken on 26 June 2013, Sig....

I remember reading about this when they found it. What a fascinating, complicated place! It makes me think of the spa I go to, and what it might look like hundreds of years from now if it were dug up. The gorgeous marbles and natural materials would probably look about like this does now, with none of the decorations or lovely touches left to be seen. (I'm not sure what Richard has as a mental image of what a public bath might be like, but I would bet it was scrupulously clean.)

I can't imagine having to have been part of this excavation time to expose this huge area. Amazing that the stonework had held up through all those years. Wonderful photo and information!
