I just saw your photo, and I think you did a magnificent job on this painting! You know - it's all a matter of creating art that pleases YOU. I'm sure whoever said the clouds were too low was just trying to be helpful, but the photo was a reference, and a starting point for this painting. I think the clouds look perfect, myself. You did a great job on this, my friend!

Gorgeous painting! The photograph is great, but I like the painting much more. I love the detail of the blades of grass against the snow, and the snow covered branches against the dark trees. Excellent use of color! I like how you have accentuated the reddish brown of the dead leaves and undergrowth. I like the sky. Beautiful work!

jock, this time around (for me), I can't do lots of comments the first time, because I only have a few days before I have to step away from RR again. (I'll be back soon, though.) So unfortunately, I have to make this my last comment for tonight. (But I sit with your work a long time, each time I'm here, and each time I look. I'm 45 minutes tonight---so I really 'commune' with your work.) I really liked the photo this was based on; but lord, you took that photo and turned it into a quiet winter wonderland. It's singing in winter browns, and red-browns---those reds are so rich, against the snow. And beautiful blues in the front grasses---icy blues---and greens. And beautiful white highlights on the branches, even high up. And that wonderful swooping brushwork in the sky. It has such colors in it, and feels very wintry but very colorful as well. I live in Chicago where winter seems to last 8000 months, and snow and ice hits us for weeks, and gives us wind-chills of 30 and 40 below: So I can tell you that there are all kinds of clouds in winter. Are they 'too low'? It depends on the day! In the upper midwest, we can have high cumulus's (big billowy things), or these sweeping cirrus's---which, though low-appearing, are actually very high up in the sky. But they can sweep right down to the horizon, believe me. I don't think they're too low: I agree with Rod: It's what you want to paint, how you interpret the scene. The clouds are very 'you', in any case; they sweep, they have real vitality, and they add a beautiful embrace to the sky. As for the snow: I take it that this snow wasn't 3 feet deep, where the whole ground is covered: This looks more like a "partial-cover"---ie, the snow is heavy in spots, but light in others. So for that type of snow, you got it right; absolutely. It "dusts" the ground in spots; while, in others, it covers the ground; and in others it barely touches the ground. That's what it looks like many times, in winter up here. So your snow and clouds are done fine, I didn't see a problem. If you lived in a cold environment, you'd see as many variations in snow and clouds as you do in nature in the summer. A beautiful icy wonderland, with beautiful detail and hues. Love the painting.
