Description

Here's something a little different - while I work on the next T.N.A. page and a few other projects..... I've been going through a bunch of old negatives, and scanning them at 4800 DPI to preserve the images. Some of my older negs have begun to show signs of deterioration, so I'm concentrating on those. This was taken in 1969-70, while I was stationed at Udorn Air Force Base in Udon-Thani, Thailand during the Vietnam 'experience.' These two young ladies are "Jit" on the left, and "Mai" on the right. They were the "house girls" for our barracks. The house girls basically did all the laundry, and some cleaning. Each floor of the 3-story barracks had 2 house girls. At the time, it was one of the best jobs for the local young ladies. The girls that were fortunate enough to land jobs at the Air Base were considered very lucky by their peers. No, they did not dress for work the way you see Jit and Mai here. These girls probably spent a good couple months' wages on the dresses you see here. They wore the dresses this day just to be my 'models.' :-D I was always kidding them, and talking to them - and taking photos of them. I learned a little Thai, and taught them a little English. They were always bringing me different fruits and local produce to try - most of it was quite delicious. Unlike a lot of the other guys, I tried to make them feel like they were more than mere house girls, and I think that made them feel good. They were both really sweet young ladies. When it came time for me to head back to the USA, they both cried. Anyway, I ran across this and several other photos of them, and just thought I'd post something from my younger days (or daze as the case may be...LOL). Has anyone heard from Rene and Ute lately? I sent Rene a sitemail but haven't had a reply yet. Hope they're OK - I sure miss Rene's zany renders and sense of humor, and Ute's fun and delightful art. Hope you all are doing well and having a great week! Thanks so much for dropping by!

Memories, eh... These two were a couple of the luckier ones. Very pretty smiles, glad they had someone like you looking out for them there. I wasn't far away at that time. The girls I met didn't wear anything so colorful, and never smiled. lol.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW! Not only is this a nice picture Rod, but the story that goes with it is fascinating and touching. I never knew you served in the Vietnam war! I guess I lucked out being born in 1960 because I was to young to get pulled into that. That's really sweet that you took an interest in those young ladies and were kind to them. It doesn't surprise me, knowing you, but it is still really nice. They obviously liked you given the fact they wept when you left. Excellent image and back story.

Great shot HotRod - you have captured their timeless beauty perfectly. Thanks for the background text to go with it as well. This always adds to an upload in my opinion. I am also glad you mentioned The Doc and Ute. I have been (and still am) wondering where they have been. I assume they are finally getting fed up with the limits of this site - like so many folks have in the past ........
