Description
dancing in the dark with norah
the song began slowly, almost uncertainly
though its entreaty was unmistakable
'come away with me
in the night' she sang along softly
breathily
into his ear as they swayed together
bodies gently moving as one
shuffle-dancing to the dusky vocals
transcending the smart-phone's tiny speaker
to transform the darkened hotel room
into a private lounge, with norah at her piano
playing, just for them
beyond the sheers clothing the windows like an open negligee
city lights swam, bobbing lazily in concert with the lovers' dance
rendered indistinct by the myriad liquid lenses
left clinging to the windowpanes by the recent rain
gently swaying white christmas lights striving
to remain identifiable to myopic eyes
he, not wanting the dance to end, nor for her to have to leave again
breathed in deeply the faint perfume of her hair
drank in with all his senses the delightfully feminine form of his beloved
moving gracefully within the loving confines of the dance frame
with which he held her
memorized her every fluid curve
consumed her every nuance with the nearly desperate hunger
of a condemned man savoring his final meal, for
with all the certainty of the passage of time
she would this hour on the morrow
be gone from him
the sultry songs segued one into the next as did the accelerating minutes
and his slowly drowning thoughts
tomorrow he'd yet again have no one to hold
no one in whose ear to whisper his hopes and dreams
once more would their love be held at a distance
were they forever destined to share one soul
yet live apart?
the lights and rolling thunder of a jet departing the neighboring airport
caught his attention as the water-smeared navigation lights
arced low across the glowering sky
he first thought the rain had returned, for the windows to appear so bathed
then realized he was merely viewing his world
through the warm stinging curtain
of his welling tears

...dedicated to the one i love... and to all of you out there working diligently at long-distance loves...
special thanks to lynell (tennesseecowgirl) for letting me doodle all over one of her photos to create the accompanying image... the very things that made it one she didn't think was particularly good made it the perfect illustration to pair with the above poem... thanks for trusting me, hon! :) ...can't wait to see you tomorrow...! xo
it's been awhile since i've posted one of my poems here (my tribute to susan / blush notwithstanding)... i hope you enjoy it!

Well this sure brought me to tears, what beautiful words, you have such an amazing talent for expressing what you feel in words. Tomorrow there will be no more distance. xo And when you asked if you could use one of my photos I had no clue which photo you were talking about I thought you meant one of me personally, and I didn't ask I just said yes and gave my permission because I trust you fully. I was out taking photos of some ducks after a rainfall when i took this photo, and just happened to see a plane that had just taken off nearby and took a quick shot of it, I almost deleted it, I am glad you could use it for your poem and that you fixed it up a bit, and made it so pretty. :) And I am looking so forward to seeing you tomorrow, I will be there at the airport waiting for you, and I sure hope you have packed your camera so we can go out exploring together, maybe get in a hike or two. And you owe me a few margaritas time to pay up. :) sweet dreams xo

I think what I like most is the image of two people dancing slowly to the music stored on a smart phone, it's simple and pure and sets an intimate mood of togetherness.
