The big day arrived, Hugh met Bernadine's parents. It all went very well though, even given the fact that Hugh wasn't able to come over with his mom's car but had to bring his dad's 'Cuda in its place. The response he and Bernie thought her dad might have was surprisingly different. Instead of being met with prying about how fast the car might be, and whether it was his; Bernadine's father was quite impressed. Inside, he felt if his father could trust him with a car like that, he must be responsible enough to be trusted with it. Hugh made a point to tell him about how his father introduced him to the car, and how he taught him to respect the amount of power car's like that can have. He also made sure to mention that it didn't have a Hemi in it anymore either. Bernie's mom was the hard sell though. It started when she answered the door and Hugh greeted her with: "You must be Katrina!" Bernadine's older sister. She felt he was merely trying to flatter her, but later realized he wasn't; and it at least scored him some approval points. But since her husband seemed to be more willing to talk cars, about what Hugh and his dad had one to the car, and football; Bernie's mother felt that she had to be the one asking about his education, future goals, and family. In the end, she was pleased with his answers; and figured it's Bernie's first boyfriend, it probably won't be a long term relationship anyway. She was more impressed with the questions he asked her about growing up in Korea, and the differences in culture and what was the most difficult things for her to adjust to after moving here. This interest in her experiences is where Hugh really scored points. Time had passed rather quickly though, and before they knew it, Hugh said he best be getting his father's car back before it got dark. Bernadine sprung up offering to walk out with him; hoping to discuss what they thought about the afternoon, but as soon as she opened her mouth, her dad also got up and said he needed to get a closer look at the car. So much for a little alone time. They were out there for a while though, and Bernadine's mom eventually came out to see what was holding up everyone. They were finishing up their discussion about the car, and saying final good-byes. Hugh expressed how wonderful it really was to meet them, and expressed what a wonderful afternoon it was for him. Much to Bernadine's surprise, her mother spoke up exclaiming how nice it was to have met him too, and that he was welcome back next weekend for dinner too if he'd like. Hugh assured her, if my dad will give me a leave from chores again, I'd love to come back. Then to everyone's surprise, Bernie's mom got up close to the car, looking at the seem between the hood and the fender, the finish of the paint, and asked; "Your father and you did all of this car?" Hugh replied, "Mostly my father, but I helped a little." Then glancing down the side of the car, Bernie's mom exclaimed; "Very, very nice job! This is a beautiful car." She then looked at her husband and said; "What, you don't think I know a quality restoration?" Bernie's father chuckled and said; "You surprise me all the time!" Hugh looked at Bernadine and whispered; "Must be another trait you picked up from your mother." But Hugh had to go, and with that, Bernadine promised to talk to him tomorrow after work.
