I have no idea if any other color would fits better at the background, Jock. I just love your fantastic music-painting as it is now, my friend.

The yellow background is fine with me because the middle fiddler is what caught my eye first!

This is marvelous! I love the perspective. Since you drew my attention to the background, I gave it some study. I like the way the speckles in the blue area merge together with the background more. The yellow speckles dominate more. However, I only noticed this because you asked. The rest of the image is so vibrant, it's not a problem. You've created such wonderful atmosphere here. I love the way the players seem both in their own worlds and very much joined with each other. I can feel their deep inner satisfaction, and their spirit of connection to the other players. Excellent work!

I read every comment above (all two pages, lol) and you got great, deserved praise for this. Many said they thought it was your best painting to date. I think it's just marvelous, and I have a special feeling for it because I was a musician since age 4, and I'm now 64, so that's 60 years as a musician (classical, jazz, folk, ethnic, even experimental). You have a real affinity for musicians, you capture them better than most artists I've known. Degas, the 19th C French artist, had a deep feeling for ballet dancers; you have a deep feeling for musicians. I don;'t know if your yellow background is a problem: You have such bold hues in the foreground, that when we goet to the background, the yellow seems muted by comparison---so it doesn't really stand out as you may think it does. And it's a quiet yellow anyway. The hues on the first two players---closest to us---man, you really have power inside you: Those are very powerful reds and blues; even the grays have power. And you paint them on with real energy: I mean, the legs of the second musician---the violinist closest to us---man, you painted those blues like they were splashed on those legs, they rush across the legs like they were alive. The folds in the red shirt are marvelous, too. And you have a light blue under a violin---it's so bright and rich. And the faces feel like they're filled with waves of energy, as if they're made of the very music you're painting. That's one of the things I love about your musical paintings: They look like music, they "feel" musical, your brush-lines are like melody lines, your alternation of colors are like big rhythmic beats. And your composition here---all crammed together, 2 musicians looking at each other---it's like the 4 musicians have become one big piece of music. The rhythms of their movements and colors are like melodies and harmonies. It's a pulsing jumping and powerful evocation of the act of making music. And the "traffic jam" of instruments at such close range makes it feel like a tight ensemble, playing very much 'in sync'. Terrific. A terrific piece. And very, very musical...As a musician, I know what it feels like to make music, and you got the feeling down, to the last stroke.
