Description
Nothing is known about the origin of the mysterious woman called Madame Xanadu. While it is rumored that she is of gypsy descent and originally came from Europe, her neighbor's in Manhattan's Greenwich Village cannot recall a time when her fortune-telling establishment was not located there. Moreover, they claim she has not aged over the years they have seen her.
The exact nature of Xanadu's supernatural powers is a mystery. Her primary ability appears to be her occult sensitivity to supernatural forces around her, enabling her to perceive mystical phenomena that ordinary people can't see. She is a mistress of the art of reading Tarot cards, which serve as a focus of her occult senses and enable her to interpret her mystical perceptions for her clients. Xanadu's other powers include the ability to tap into mystical energies around her and a limited ability to levitate objects. There is also some evidence - far from conclusive - that she can banish demons from the mortal plane, and that she can appear and disappear at will. She apparently ages very slowly, if at all, and may possibly be immortal.
Madame Xanadu makes use of the ambiguous and controversial deck of 78 Tarot cards to see and reveal all. The deck is hand-painted on pasteboard, the artist unknown. The origins of the Tarot are lost to antiquity but are the basis for our modern deck of 52 playing cards. Her cards are apparently of the Rider-Waite variety, generally considered the most relevant distillation of the many Tarot types. Lacking powers of their own, the cards only serve to focus Madam Xanadu's natural abilities to see beyond this reality.
