Description

A few miles down the road from Mt, Rushmore, work is in progress on what will be the largest stone sculpture in the world. This is the Chief Crazy Horse Memorial - and the scale of this work boggles the mind! Look closely at the flat surface in front of Crazy Horse's face... You will see figures of a few workers on what will someday be his arm. The white lines on the rock are an outline of where the horse's head and ear will be. What looks like a pattern of vertical lines on the rock surface are actually drill marks left from the holes that were filled with explosives to blast the rock away - very carefully. I used my 300 mm telephoto lens to get this up close and personal shot. You can read about the sculpture, and even see webcams at the Crazy Horse Memorial Website. Thanks for dropping by! Another photo coming shortly!

I remember when this was first started by a single man... he passed away, but his sons are involved and carrying on his dream. I was always in awe of that man, don't recall his name at the moment.. and grateful that he wanted to create a monument for the original inhabitants of this country. Bravo!!!

His name was Korczak Ziolkowski - his wife, sons and daughters are continuing his work today. This project was actually started in June of 1948 - 65 years ago!

I've never been to Mt. Rushmore or the Crazy Horse site. One of the few real bucket lists I have yet to do in western USA. You can tell it is going to be an amazing site - if it ever gets finished.

Wow imagine the talent it takes to be able to carve in rock? 65 years + in the making?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. I didn't know that. It will be the largest stone carving in the world? It doesn't look like it will be even as big as Rushmore. But then, they still have the horse and his arm to go I guess. Cool shot!
