Description

Largest seaplane ever built and all out of birch and spruce wood. Builder: Howard Hughes. Location: Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, McMinnville, Oregon. Got a number of shots inside but went back after dark and took this shot through the huge museum windows.

You can see the propellers are small compared to the size of the plane because they had to attach smaller motors to the wood in those thick wings!

Just to set the record straight: The engines on this seaplane are called Wasp Majors and are the largest, most powerful Pratt and Whitney piston engines produced. They represent the culmination of P&W piston engine technology. Each engine has 28 cylinders and produced more 3,000 horsepower. If they were started incorrectly, all 56 spark plugs became fouled. It took mechanics hours to remove, clean and reinstall them all. The propellers are 17 feet in diameter. The engines may appear small compared to the massive wings but they were the largest of the day (1944-1947).

Holy frack..... What a beast! I knew the Goose was huge, but your description of the engines puts it into perspective! Mr. Hughes dreamed REALLY big, didn't he? This is an amazing shot, Bill!

I spent one whole day there last year when I want home for a couple weeks. Didn't get a shot like this one though. Thanks.

This is an amazing shot Bill, so glad you went back! Yes those engines are something else and I was surpised at this sight because I have always thought there were only three on each side! A marvellous achievement by Hughes!

When you consider how eccentric the man, just goes to show he was also very resourceful. Great idea to visit it in the darker environs Bill. Night shooting always presents a very different view of the world. Would love to paint this with light :)

Cool silhouetted capture of this wood leviathan, Bill. I was inside this monster many years ago when it was based down here in Southern California. Maybe I can dig up my old film shots of it. This is really one of a kind.

It flew once, on its first run.. (a test run for the engines supposedly), and never flew again.. Amazing.. Out of date, before it was ready, much like Britain's six engined Princess Flying Boat.. awesome! awesome! AWESOME!!! Rob

Yup. It certainly is the very definition of "King Size." Love the silhouetted Mig 29 and F-14.
