Description

Entered this in a local competition. Did not place but it generated a lot of commentary as people tried to figure out what it meant. I was happy with that. It's about memories. The memory of childhood when you were living carefree and you could just run along the sandy beach; when your parents were still with you, as you thought they always would be. It's about being a parent and trying to capture those fleeting moments on whatever media you have at hand, because you know those times are brief, they will not last - and while life's moments are as ephemeral as the wind you do not want them to simply slip away - you want to capture those moments for eternity. For me I want to capture not only what is, but also what I feel it could be. The more I work in this media the more I realize realism is only important if that is what I feel is most expressive of the image. Sometimes reality is just stunning unto itself, but I believe every photo no matter how real, still carries an essence of you with it. Sometimes, however, I get so wrapped up in capturing the moment that I forget to actually live it. This I have to constantly remind myself of when I am travelling. Do not forget also to experience the moment without the lens. For that experience will become a part of that essence of you; it is what will make the image uniquely yours. And memorable for it.

One word.... Brilliant! Both the image and the words.... I have to confess - the feeling and memories you have stirred with this combination of words and imagery brought a couple tears to the surface. True art stirs you in ways that can bring a smile and a tear at the same moment. This IS art, Roxy. Superbly done! I love the treatment you have given this - like an old photo found in an unexpected place - old and worn, but still full of memories.

I like the color palette, the impressionist feel & the crinkled paper look - it all works together very organically. And I know what you mean about "the moment without the lens". When I was much younger (over 40 years ago), I became obsessed with photography for a while & found myself turning into a passive observer of life rather than a participant. I went cold turkey at that point & didn't take any photos for a couple of years. After that, I was able to resume taking photos, but have been able to avoid becoming obsessed about it...

Very beautiful work. Great style capture of an old photograph that's been kept in someone's wallet or handbag.

This charmed me in that each of the two pursues his own thoughts and yet form a unit. The boy is connected as by an invisible bond with the woman. The antique look strengthened your statement. Wonderful capture, Roxy

Love the effects in your shot. I find myself not living in the moment. Always worrying about the future.

Roxie, I was very moved by this powerful and dramatic presentation. I think if you would have been able to share your thoughts behind the image, that you would have not only placed but probably won it ;)

The cool thing about this is that if it was black and white it could be from any time period, great image!

This is a powerful and wonderful image and it does evoke the old memories. Time travel does exist - Memories is the vehicle to travel to the past
