Description

A couple of people have expressed interest in my new Canon 70D, so I thought I'd show you a test shot I took at the air museum at McMinnville. (I wasn't going to post this, but it's easier to show than tell, and those who were asking can draw their own conclusions!) :) For those of you interested in the content ... these are beach balls in the hold of the Spruce Goose, Howard Hughes' famous flying boat. As I recall, they were part of an emergency flotation system. I believe these are reproductions ... there was one original ball on display, but these were to show the context of the system. For those of you who were interested in the new 70D ... this was shot at ISO 12,800, hand held, at 1/100th and f7.1. No ... that's not a typo! The ISO on the new DIGIC6 processor really does go that high, and as you can see, it does a pretty good job of it. (Of course I could have lowered the f-stop to 2.8, but I didn't need to in order to test the ISO, which was the point of the exercise.) And when I say "hand held," that's exactly what I mean. I wasn't leaning on a railing or anything. I just stood there and took the shot. You can see a bunch of grain in the darker areas, but in the better lit sections the balls are astonishingly grain free considering that ISO level, and at least semi-sharp as well. "Better lit" is relative. It was freakin' DARK in there! For the sake of comparison, I couldn't shoot this with the T3i and get any kind of picture at all in these conditions. Perhaps I would have achieved a blurry light blob, but that's about it. So yeah, I'm happy with the new camera! I'm also happy that the camera store we deal with took ALL our old gear in trade, so we don't have stacks of old cameras sitting around, and it lowered the price! :)

Amazing. Never saw exif data like this. I believe you to be first to pull it off here. Incredible. The 7OD will be my next camera. I like everything I have read about it, and this image seals it. :-)

I agree completely! The extended range of useful ISO today is amazing, and not just with Canon but they may be the best. My stuff falls apart when I push ISOs to just 2000. I can think of one dance show I could have shot so much better with your camera!

I'm too afraid to go much over 400 ISO; perhaps I'll become bolder and test my limits too. Nicely done!

Nice shot. I thought you were checking the color balance or something like that, but here you give info on your new camera that is way over my head. But I thought it interesting that these balls, or similar ones, were used as emergency flotation devices. Apparently being made of wood wasn't enough to keep the 'Spruce Goose' afloat if it crash landed. But I doubt that there would be much left if she had crashed.
