Description

This is a zoom from a pretty good distance away. I saw this & I thought it was a plant of some kind at the waters edge. My close up vision is not very good (I use magnifying glasses for reading & don't usually wear them when taking photos) & I really couldn't tell what it was through the viewfinder. Though I never got very close to it, I was in the general area for several minutes & it didn't move at all. It was only when I got home & uploaded my photos that I realized this was an upside down crab. If I had realized it at the time, I would have gone over to it & tried to flip it over, but I can't really be sure if it was dead or alive. Seems like a strange position if it was dead, but it also seems strange to me that it would have stayed frozen in that position for so long if it was alive. Maybe someone who knows more about crab behavior can clear this up for me... Please zoom.

Dead or alive, it's a fascinating shot! Is it giving you the finger? Engaging in an avant-garde dance sequence? Doing crab yoga? It seems to me if it had well and truly expired, its legs would have relaxed, or there would be an opportunistic gull nearby. Maybe it's just waiting for the next high tide.

I shoot things like this sometimes too, not sure what they are until I see them on the computer, but I've never gotten anything as interesting as this. For a long shot you sure got a lot of detail, well done!

Looks like an other-worldly sailing vessel or an out-of-control Viking helmet. I'm glad you snapped it even if you couldn't tell what the hell you were shooting.

Maybe he's just hungry and trying to lure a gull into those claws for dinner!

Excellent lighting and a fantastic zoom. Tara could be right - one of those legs does seem to be sending you a message! :o)
