Description

Richard Magrath, the owner and Head Chef of The Dudsbury where we often have lunch. The website of this super gastropub is here www.thedudsbury.com/index.htm with lots of great pics and menus. See the original which I moved Here I think this one works better in colour: the fuller face has too few wrinkles for a really good black and white!

I like the monotone better, I think; it makes him seem a bit edgier. Great portrait!

B&W does indeed work so well with portraits, although I think many photographers shoot in colour, even going back before digital camera's they would shoot in colour and then often choose B&W because it's not easy to colour a B&W photograph although today it can be done very well indeed, back in the older days they were often hand tinted.

What's that they say about judging a book by its cover? The first word that came to mind when I saw this was 'Rugby'. He seems like quite a solid fellow. I think you are right about the wrinkles but the black and white enhances the shadows and all the little details. A wonderful portrait.
