Description

Yesterday we spent several hours at Mono Lake. The rock formations you see were formerly below the surface of the lake. They were formed when mineral-laden spring water bubbled up into the salty water of Mono Lake. Calcium carbonate (limestone) was the result. The City of Los Angeles started diverting water from Mono Lake in 1941, and the lake level dropped nearly 50 feet over the next 40 years. Conservation efforts have allowed the lake level to start to rise again. Mono is a habitat for birds, migratory and otherwise, and it's a fabulous place to visit. For more information on Mono Lake, visit their website HERE

Beautiful, great light & composition. A unique place - it's been many, many years since I've been there...

If it wasn't for the backdrop and the ducks, it could well be an Alien landscape ... these formations remind me of cave-formed stalagmites in tights LOL lucky for you, to get this phenomena before the levels rise any further ;P a very remarkable and surreal-looking image. BB

Very cool capture Tara! in one respect it's cool that the levels dropped so we can see all this splendor - however the cost was/is too high. I am glad that the levels are coming back up

Mono Lake is one of the most amazing places I've ever seen. I stopped there a couple of years ago, walked around and just stared. The history of it is also pretty amazing, the Owens Valley story goes way, way back. Nasty politics and LA managed to steal the water. I always wonder what it would be like if that hadn't happened. Great foto and thanks for reminding me of this great place!!

This is a very lovely shot with the beautiful golden, brown rocks. Especially the most left little rock which is catching the reflections from the bigger sun bathing rock.

All my years living up and down in California and I never made it there. I have flown over it, but that's as close as I got. This is a wonderful shot, most captures only give you the long view of these deposits, to show the vast number of them, but I love seeing them this close. Well done!

A wonderful shot of the Tufa towers with the hazy mountains in the distance. The islands in the lake have been a sanctuary for the birds. As the water level dropped it exposed a land bridge from the islands to the mainland and the bird population was decimated by predators. Eventually dynamite was used to blow up the bridge and protect the birds.
