Description

Wasn't sure about the shot, as it was too bright w/ too much contrast---but the sight is a real "marilyn" sight, because of her love for her magnificent ocean, and I always said that our waves are the "lesser siblings" of hers... But also: Marilyn was here, I mean right on this pier! With Tara, Chip, Corey, Cheri, Dave and Juanita (all RR people, but for Juanita). Yet on THAT weekend, the waters were still as glass, and she and Tara kept saying, "your lake is so CALM!" As you can see, when Lake Michigan acts up, it freakin' acts up. Not as majestic as Marilyn's Pacific; but for a lake, it's pretty damned impressive... When you meet Marilyn, she's just what you expected, only moreso: Immensely sweet, very funny, always willing to celebrate no matter the day, season or year, joy-filled and more exploratory and free than 200 of me, someone who knows that to Dance is infinitely finer than to plod: She's a total delight, in other words, and extremely dear. I know her friends agree. As frosting on the cake, I luuuuv her photography! I once urged her to get a high-end camera, but she doesn't wanna be bogged down with the equipment: She just wants to get out and shoot, stand on precipices, climb broken buildings---she's done all these things---and trudge through whatever the world throws at her, to get her unique shots... What she gets from her cameras dumbfounds me---power, suddenness, protean energy, exquisite beauty, so unexpected and new. In fact I'm using her previous camera: I bought it from her, hoping the magic would rub off, a little of 'the marilyn gene', stuffed away in the sensor... Marilyn, you've been through a ton since I've met you, and you've journeyed like one of those Pacific waves you so love---all energy, light and determination and joy. I wish you many more years with great happiness, and thank you for being a terrific friend and a burst of sun in my life. Happy birthday friend, with love and light from the midwest (where it's flat and nothing ever happens), Mark

Wow Mark, first of all allow me to say how nice it is to see you back in the gallery. I can't begin to imagine a more thoughtful dedication and am certain she will appreciate this gift. Now let me say what a marvelous shot this is, as the water splashing about adds a real flair. I enjoyed reading about the reason you selected this location, as I did you're thoughts on Marilyn.

Bonjour, Je suis ébloui par les contrastes et les lumières de ce cliché. Une fois encore l'eau y trouve sa place.

Omg, Mark, you know me SO well and I'm blushing furiously at your words. Thanks for this wonderful birthday dedi; I'm celebrating by first stacking a cord of firewood, then who knows what. Nothing big, I assure you!!

A stark and stunning capture of the ocean, butting heads with the rugged pier, in this amazing action pic, Mark. I like the scene, what with the violent act of nature contrasted against the more sedate geometric artificiality in the background. And, the Marilyn you describe is not the Marilyn that I'm familiar with.

What a brilliant ACTION shot, Mark; perfect for Marilyn, since she's so good at them too. The white isn't blown, it's just taking whiteness to its limit, which is something else Marilyn likes to do. I love this!

This is superb. It immediately brings to mind the story you've told of being to close to one of these mini-rogue waves and getting drenched and doing a tuck and roll to protect your camera. The effort you go through to photograph and postwork your pictures is not lost on me for one second. And your words describing Marilyn and her approach to life...second to none. Well done sir:-)

A lovely birthday tribute, with this grand crashing wave, so full of energy. And such a nice contrast with the buildings.
