Description

A few days ago we visited the Annenberg gardens in Rancho Mirage, California (it's down the street from Palm Springs), which gave me an opportunity to take photographs in an environment that felt almost alien to me. Cactus, succulents, plants of amazing variety ... and none of them grow outdoors in the chilly, rainy climate with which I'm most familiar. It was a challenge to start to see the place as a photographer rather than as an out-of-town guest. I picked up a brochure that lists every type of plant in the gardens, confident I would have all the necessary identification information at my fingertips once I got home. Not ONE of the pictures in that oh, so comprehensive brochure was of a fluffy white seed pod. If you want to know more about the Annenbergs or the gardens, check out the Sunnylands website. Edit note: This seems to be Asclepias subulata, more commonly known as desert milkweed. Denise and Kat got me looking at milkweed varieties, and I was able to match it up in the brochure. If you're interested, do an image search on Google ... you'll be surprised ... it looks nothing like common milkweed!

Milkweed? Rosebay Willowherb? That's all I can come up with. Whatever it is, it's soft and fluffy and very white, and beautifully captured.

First an amazing pic from Bill !!! - and now you with this one !!! I cannot believe how cool this 'pod' looks. Is there a competition between the two of you ??? ;P (you both deserve to be in LWITG ;)) yours and his (Abandoned) are both outstanding images, I feel so inadequate with my poor sub(sob!)missions ;( A stunning result Tara, the kind I really, really, really like ... t does look like milkweed to me also (I do not think have not seen the Rosebay Willowherb) although without seeing a few of the leaves I cannot say for sure. Monarch butterflies like to lay their eggs on milkweed. Anyway this is a WOW photo. The lighting on this is truly impressive. Thank you for sharing another for my favorites file.
