Description

Amanita muscaria. A very striking specimen on Redhill Common. When I got back from delivering Buddy to Weymouth yesterday there was an expression of great relief on Ralph's face as he realised that the dog was not with me. We had a very peaceful and tension free evening, and Fritz can be top (if not tall!) dog again should he choose.

What a fine specimen, a classic.. many people do consider this mushroom highly poisonous and of course is associated in stories such as the hallucinatory mushroom responsible for Alice's trip into wonderland. There are minimal number of deaths associated with the consumption of this Mushroom all have circumstances not fully associated with it's famed toxic nature, it is hallucinatory but dogs and cats can be attracted to it and if they should consume it then it will surely kill them... reality is to best avoid it as it requires knowledge regarding the processes required to detoxify it in the boiling stages... red does mean danger and it is often the easiest rule of thumb.. apparently reindeers like to consume it and enjoy the high it gives them.. so the image of a red coated portly gent with a white beard flying through the air with reindeers is not so far fetched when it's hallucinogenic powers are clear. Best avoid unless for great captures such as this one.

What a magnificent macro of this gorgeous mushroom, so flamboyant in its coloring. Other than the color and warts on top, it has the shape of a broccoli floret. And, peace, stability and group identity has been restored in the Andrea household, with the departure of the handsome but provocative Buddy.

The relaxed look on Ralph's face alone tells you that you've made the right decision. It's the good of the whole that has to be considered first. Buddy is a young and beautiful pup who will not spend too much time in the shelter. I love these gorgeous mushrooms! I always expect to see a little gnome peeking around from behind on of these! a great capture!
