Description

I have just returned from an amazing safari in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park here in Southern Africa. It was my first visit as an adult and I now have a new favourite wildlife reserve. It was VERY hot - between 36C and 39C! Here is some information on the Kgalagadi: Kgalagadi means place of thirst. The park is located largely within the southern Kalahari Desert. The terrain consists of red sand dunes, sparse vegetation, occasional trees, and the dry riverbeds of the Nossob and Auob Rivers. The rivers are said to flow only about once per century. However, water flows underground and provides life for grass and camelthorn trees (a type of acacia) growing in the dry river beds. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is massive - 38,000 km2 (15,000 sq mi). Kgalagadi consisted of two adjacent parks – one in the neighbouring Botswana and one in South Africa. On 7 April 1999, Botswana and South Africa signed a historic bilateral agreement whereby both countries undertook to manage their adjacent national parks, the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana and the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa as a single ecological unit. The boundary between the two parks had no physical barriers, although it is also the international border between the two countries. This allowed for the free movement of animals. On 12 May 2000, President Festus Mogae of Botswana and President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa formally launched Southern Africa's first peace park, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. I am starting off with the mighty Oryx. (Gemsbok in Afrikaans) The Oryx is also the "brand" or symbol of the Kgalagadi. Thank you for stopping by and for your very welcome comments abd favs on my last upload. Carin xx

Barbara - unfortunately the Kgalagadi is not a Big Five reserve. The conditions are not at all condusive for elephant, rhino or buffalo. There are plenty of cats though! :)

A very handsome fellow but obviously up to no good. He is wearing a black mask so you won't be able to identify him later. From your description I can see why you had such a good time, even in the place of thirst. Maybe someday.
