Description

The seedheads of Clematic vitalba, also know when in flower as Traveller's Joy. the hedges can be full of this in Dorset. The dried stems were once smoked by young boys, hence another old name for the plant, 'boys' bacca'. Beggars used to arouse sympathy by rubbing their legs with fresh twigs, as an irritant in the sap produced the appearance of ulcers! info from the 16th century botanist John Gerard. There is another photo Here I have explained how the tracks on the beach are made under yesterday's post: Bill was right.

Exquisite shot! they really are a joy for any traveller aren't they? The seeds look very large too, a bumper year for so many things.

I love this stage of this plant. I didn't know the boys bacca thing though :) Back in the 80's I used to mix coltsfoot with my baccy. The times I got pulled by the old bill was remarkable. But I have to admit it, it did smell like a more nefarious plant :)

Why am I not surprised? You English have the most colorful language but now I'm thinking of Monty Wooley. Excellent close up.

Bet the old man is furious (chuckle). Fine capture, if you had an available head to stand behind that it would look like a real beard. If father Christmas gets caught clean shaven he knows were to go in emergency.lol
