Description
Abandoned, rusty vehicles are common sights where I live & I suppose in much of rural America. I've passed this particular car quite a few times on walks my wife & I have taken & always thought about taking a shot of it, but it just didn't quite seem interesting enough. Then, a few days ago, I saw it in the snow & that seemed to be the necessary added ingredient to make it worthwhile. At least I thought so - I hope you agree, because we won't be taking this particular walk again because...
...just a little further down the road from this property, there's a rottweiler inside a fenced yard that barks & growls menacingly at everyone who passes. Comically, there's a pair of sheep that follow him wherever he goes & we've never been concerned about him since he's fenced in. But this time, it seems he's learned a new trick - I saw him jump over the fence & approach us with bad intent. We kept walking as calmly as we could without making eye contact & told him to go home. He kept barking at us, but didn't follow us too far. We had to pass him again on the way back & he jumped the fence again & started to come at us barking loudly. Same thing, we kept walking & this time a large truck came by causing him to retreat momentarily & allowing us to get further down the road. We won't be walking there again. Fortunately, it's not our road (it's a few minutes car ride away) & not a place that many people walk, so no big loss, but it was a very uncomfortable situation.

It does look a bit battered and beaten up but you are right the snow is the added ingredient that made the pic worthwhile, well taken

Yes, barking dogs DO BITE. I speak from personal experience. Be careful if you go back.

I like the way the snow accentuates the lines of the car. Nicely seen, and well done! Sorry to hear about the rott ... they can be such sweet dogs, but one never knows. It's all down to how they've been trained and/or treated. I had a rott friend who thought she was a lapdog. Only 135 pounds! LOL! She would come over and lean on me until I started petting or brushing her. Such a sweetie!

I completely agree, Tara, they can be very sweet dogs if properly trained & socialized. As can pitbulls. We knew some people who ran an organization that rehabilitated pitbulls (they took in Michael Vick's pitbulls) & after rehabilitation, their pitbulls were very gentle & loving dogs. It's sad that some people feel the need to either train their dogs to be hostile & aggressive or abuse them to the point where they feel threatened by humans.

Looks like that was a nightmare for a driver.

Yes I agree with what you wrote to tara, here, about training dogs to be hostile---it's an especial shame, as dogs are some of the most naturally loving creatures to humans on earth. A real shame...I have to say, too, that when I saw the pic, I thought "the car belongs to the dog!" (That's why he's upset. You're shooting the damned car and he's pissed off. See, I have the flu, just ignore me---my humor's normally awful, but when I'm sick? don't ask...) This treatment---you really do have a feel for graphic work, I don't know if you've done it or not, but it sure shows in some of your treatments. And the pov has the car at an angle from the road and also at a slight angle from the background; and your postwork makes everything feel very graphic with atomized surfaces, so all these cross lines---counterpoints---are emphasized by the nitty gritty of your grain, etc. (Etc = your edge detail, sharpness of leaf and branch, the snow-lines, etc.) It's a striking piece of contrast; and the blues, which dominate, set off the yellows behind the trees, and that turquoise-green of the car. Really, only old VW's can look that way! A wonderful capture, true to abandoned VW's, and I love it. (I've been here 90 minutes, and unfortunately I think I'm gonna have to go sI have a flu and pretty soon my language is gonna start to resemble bird calls. But you've been in my gallery from time to time, and always been encouraging and insightful; and, knowing your work, I've wanted to return for a long session for a while. I hope to be back soon.. In the meantime, have a terrific new year, and happy holiday to you and all those you love!)

The snow and the light coming through the trees makes this a very good capture. Smart to avoid walking done that road again but also a shame that you can't!
