Description
Volume II - Episode 45
Where: Melbourne, Australia
When: 1 month and 2 days after E-Day, 11:28 am
The girl who stepped around the corner was maybe 10 or 11 years old. I recognised her instantly. She was one of the daughters in the family photos on the living room wall.
From the look of shock and disappointment on her face, she'd been hoping to find somebody else in her family's kitchen. (Her parents, she thought her parents had come back.) When she realised I wasn't who she'd hoped I was, the expression on her face quickly changed to one of terror. She flinched, winced, and took an unsteady step backwards. Her mouth opened, as if about to say something, but all that came out was an unintelligible "aah".
I, of course, did the only thing a grown man can do when faced with a young, helpless girl in distress, alone and separated from her family.
I ran.
I ran faster than I'd ever run before.
I made it over The Great Barrier Wall in a single clambering leap.
