Description

Volume II - Episode 49 Where: Cologne, Germany When: 1 month and 5 days after E-Day, 1:53 pm Cathy woke up terrified and alone. Oh, Rob, where are you? She looked around at her surroundings. She was no longer in the hospital ward. She in a small nurse's office. The door was shut. And, presumably, locked. She checked herself for injuries. Her body was getting more and more worse off as the day wore on. In addition to the bandages around her severed fingers and broken nose, there was also now a fresh patch of medical gauze stuck to her left armpit where the soldier had shot her. Oh my God, I've been shot! She fell into uncontrollable, wracking sobs. How had things gotten so bad in such a short amount of time? How had it all happened? Why had it happened? Was she being punished? Half an hour later, a key slid into the door and nurse Monika stepped into the room. The stern-faced German glanced at Cathy, then quickly locked the door behind her. Cathy caught a glimpse of at least three armed guards standing outside. Monika dropped a clipboard on her desk and walked to Cathy's bedside. "How are you feeling?" she asked. Her face wore an expression of deep concern. "I'm...I'm okay. It doesn't hurt too much. I guess I'm pretty drugged up?" "Yes," Monika said. "We'll try to keep you as pain-free as possible. Catherine, I want to apologise for the way you have been treated here. It is completely unacceptable. The soldier who shot you has been placed under arrest, and his supporters have been reassigned. My commander takes discipline very seriously. They will not be allowed to return to this hospital under any circumstances." "That man...that patient they took away...he died?" For a split second, Monika's matter-of-fact expression softened. "Yes. He had a heart attack. His injuries were...his injuries were too great." "That's why the soldier was angry with me? That's why he shot me?" "Yes." Cathy chewed on this for a moment. On top of everything else she was feeling - pain, fear, anxiety over her beloved missing husband - something new crept in to take over. Guilt. "What was his name?" "Which one?" "The man who died." "Pfeifer. Private Sven Pfeifer." Sven Pfeifer. Cathy had killed four men in her life. This was only the second one she'd felt remorse for. "Are you okay?" Monika asked. "I'm okay. It's just...they were shooting at us. They were going to kill us if I hadn't...no, never mind. I'm okay." Monika allowed Cathy a few moments to regain her composure. The business-like expression had returned to her face. "Catherine, listen. I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but you are still in danger here. Private Pfeifer was a popular soldier. He had many friends. Some of them have requested transfers to the prisoner of war camp in Berlin. They figure that's where you will be moved to once you leave here." Cathy's eyes widened. Her guilt gave way to panic. "I want you to know I will do everything in my power to keep you here at the hospital with me. I will be able to keep you safe. But in order to do that, I will have to find a use for you. My commander won't allow me to keep you here for safekeeping, or as a pet. I'll need to prove to him that you can be useful to me. Do you understand?" Cathy nodded. "So, what can you do? Have you ever worked in a hospital before?" Cathy shook her head. "What was your job back in America?" "Nothing, really. I mean, I used to work in an office, but...that was years ago." "You didn't work?" [CONTINUED IN FIRST COMMENT BELOW]

"No. Rob was the breadwinner in our house. But it was a struggle. He used to have a good job. He was in marketing - you know, advertising? But they fired him when they found out he was a warlock and his wife was a spellslinger. It was bad for publicity. We thought he'd be able to find a job at a different agency - he was well-known and pretty respected in the industry - but somehow it got into the news, and after that nobody would touch him. He ended up just doing odd jobs. Weeding gardens and fixing taps. Handyman stuff." "So you were a housewife?" "Sort of." "Were you looking after children?" Cathy flinched. Monika remained silent, giving Cathy time to answer. Finally, she did. "Rob and I had a daughter. Her name was Ellie. She was the most beautiful little thing...the most beautiful little thing." Cathy trailed off, staring at the floor. Monika gave her time to continue. "She died two years ago." "I'm very sorry to hear that, Catherine," Monika said. "I really am. May I ask how she died? Was she sick, perhaps?" Cathy shook her head, still staring at the floor. "She drowned. She was staying with my mother while Rob and I went out for our anniversary. They were playing by my mother's pool, and...my mother took her eyes off her for just a few seconds...just a few seconds..." The air in the room suddenly felt very heavy. An awkward silence crept between them. "That must have been very heartbreaking," Monika said, finally. "I had a nervous breakdown. I couldn't work. I could barely feed myself. I couldn't function as a human being. They diagnosed me with PTSD and fed me antidepressants, but nothing worked. My little baby...my little Ellie..." Ellie. The memories came flooding back. The phone call. The high-speed race across town to reach the hospital. The way the grim-faced nurse had pulled back the curtain to reveal her beautiful baby girl lying there, completely motionless. Oh, Rob, where are you? "I'm so sorry," Monika said again. She took Cathy's hand in hers. That was the last straw for Cathy. Grief suddenly overwhelmed her. She burst into tears and did not stop crying for quite some time. Monika reacted instantly. She pulled the younger woman into her arms, careful to avoid the armpit where she had been shot, and hugged her while she wept.
