In my opinion, there's nothing better then back lighting in both photography and painting. Someone once told me that shooting into the sun will most likely destroy the camera's sensor. So I do like you do, use a tree to hide behind so the sun doesn't blast into the camera lens. But check that info out for yourself, I don't know if that's the right way to handle sun or not.

I think this is a masterpiece, Jock! I mean, just look at the glowing light and reflections - this combines the best of impressionism and realism into one magnificent painting. Outstanding, Jock! I think whoever told you that was thinking that pointing a digital camera into the sun would damage its sensor.

Excellent painting I cant see a problem painting into the sun, with cameras the others have said about destroying the sensor but also be careful if it has an optical viewfinder as this can burn the retina causing blindness.

I imagine the "don't paint or shoot into the sun" rule is because it's not easy to balance all that light in a single image. (Or, with cameras, because heavy sun in the lens can burn the sensor---if it's exposed for too long.) But those rules go away when an artist's talent overtakes it: I imagine you can paint anything if you're called to---you can step over the rules, as your talent allows you that... The trees (and their reflections) are turned into all kinds of vital lights and darks and energies, in your painting. And the grasses in the bottom, and middle of the painting are so sinewy and energetic. The piece pulses with energies and electricities; and while you may have taken time to paint it, it feels like you did it in a moment, an intuition: it's very spontaneous and direct. As always, I love your color contrasts (blues with yellows, for example); and the way you render light and sky into an almost iced treat. A big pouring lit view of water, plants and trees, with wonderful painterly strokes. More scintillating painting from you, Jock. They just keep coming.
