Description
Originally conceived as a long range escort for the four engined B-29s, the North American P/F-82 instead generally earned distinction in the Korean War as the F-82G radar equipped night fighter variant. Powered by twin Packard-produced licensed versions of the Rolls-Royce Merlin V powerhouse, the P/F-82 sported two P-51H Mustang fuselages and assemblies mated to a single main wing and elevator assembly. Two pilots manned the craft to share the workload. (Must have been pretty weird to look out over your shoulder and see another pilot in a fuselage about 10 feet away mimicking your every flight move!)
The P/F-82 was the last piston powered fighter mass produced for the war and was soon replaced by jet powered aircraft.
It was one of the more successful designs (along with the He-111) that relied on the mating of two existing fuselages in a single aircraft design.
P-82 Twin Mustang: Excellent model, graciously shared for free at sharecg by that fine craftsman, Pedro Caparros. Some texturing down in my paint shop.
B-29 Superfortress: free at cool3d. Heavily pounded into my requirements and retextured.
Pilots: Epici low poly enemy soldier LWR_01 here at Rendo
Pilot Gear: adh3d Pilot gear also here at Rendo.

Magnificent render. You have managed to show 20 aircraft in the box and yet, the composition is not recharged. As for the story three points: The engines were not the Packard Merlin that equipped the P-51D, but Alison V-1710 counter-rotating (trouble paying the license to Rolls Royce?) Nor was the same fuselage as the P-51H Mustang, the length was 1.8m longer, and vertical tail plane and rudder were minors. Indeed, I wanted to take a 3D model P-51D I had done a few years ago, but the fuselage, wings, stabilizer, propeller, landing gear, etc.. were different. I do not understand your idea of sharing the workload. In the left fuselage, was the pilot's seat, on the right (with reduced instrumentation) the copilot / navigator / radar operator. I guess in the long flights, alternated to pilot and rest. Thank you very much for the mention.

Nice composition of so many craft all at once Bill.

I stand corrected, Pedro. Some misinformation on the site that I got the info at I guess. Great work on the plane, and I always assume that your research is pretty thorough.

Certainly my favorite fighter of WWII, the P-51 was a magnificent aircraft. Fine render!
