Description
Though not as well known as its wildly successful and better known successor, the Douglas DC-2 was arguably the first passenger plane that ushered in the experience of luxury and comfort in air travel. Many of the aircraft were made overseas for European customers by the Fokker company! In 1934, KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) entered the DC-2 in the MacRobertson Air Race between London and Melbourne. It won second place. The De Havilland DH.88, which was built especially for the purpose won first. The DC-2 was in the air on the regular KLM route for over 81 hours, performing all the task of the normal 9,000 route with an additional 1,000 miles. The flight delivered mail and made every normal passenger stop. Additionally it made a backtrack flight to pick up a stranded passenger (imagine that today!), got lost in a thunderstorm and stuck in the mud near the end of the flight. Impressive.
As I mentioned in the last post, for some reason this plane sparks some really fond memories of this era as portrayed in movies and books of the era.

You can see where the DC-3 gets it's lines from. Both beautiful planes. The image is absolutely a wonderful shot and an incredible render. Love it.

A super job! I have to get that plane. The first flight of my life was in a civilian C-46 flying from Jefferson City Mo. to Oklahoma City where we boarded a 707. What a difference between those two planes! To an eight year old kid it was high adventure. I sure do love the old rotary engine planes.
