Description

I'm sorry for my two "vanishing images" yesterday, esp because some of you had already commented. But I saw your comments, and I appreciated them all, as I always do. (Your fav's too.) A dear friend suddenly fell ill, and until he was out of critical condition, I couldn't leave up a happy upload. Mind you, he and his family wouldn't have minded, but I needed to hear that he'd made it, that he'd be ok, until I could post again... (He's much better now, and coming home in a week.) So NOW, ladies and gentlemen, I give you my New Year's wish. (And this one won't come down!) I want to wish all of you a New Year filled with tons of silliness and joy. Yes silliness. I mean where things "drop out of the sky" for no good reason, and make you want to dance on the rooftops. Where you wake up on a gloomy morning and the trees are doing the Fox Trot and you join them. (It happens. I've seen it.) That kind of joy. Giddy joy. Which shakes the crust off of life and we become kids again... ...and to thank you not only for all you've given me here, but for what you give period. It's nuts to create for no other reason than to 'create': It's an act of insanity and wild love. To agonize over every little detail and spend hours on one piece, and then say, "I CAN'T SHOW THIS TO ANYONE!!!" and then start all over??? For "one little pic"? Or poem? Who else would do that but artists? So we should sing from the rooftops, be willing to be fools and fall flat on the ground. Then we'll deserve Beethoven's famous quip, when someone bowed to a dignitary: "Don't bow to them---they should bow to US!" Not because we're arrogant---no---but because anyone who jumps off of clouds to chase a ray of light---and sing arias to it when they catch it---is worth a bow as much as any dignitary or CEO. So, a wholly joyous New Year to you all with love and gratitude from me, and sprinkled with tons of inner peace, Mark (the photo's more detailed full size...but hope you enjoy it either way!)

Wonderful work as only you can do, Mark. I especially enjoyed your amusing thoughts on what it means to be an artist, photographer or poet. I'll be sure to keep you and your friend in my prayers, and I hope you have a Happy New Year!

I love the high-key feel to this; I almost thought it was snow, until I noticed the flowers and leaves on the tree...and speaking of snow, I'd sure love to have some of THAT fall out of the sky on me, in mass quanitities. I know a lot of folks will say "Oh no, you can have all of it!" but for someone who loves it like I do, it's just not fair that we get so little here. Happy New Year to you Mark, and all your circle of loved ones. I hope you all have health and blissful surprises!

OMG, finally! ;) A masterfully composed and sharply contrasted photograph to commemorate the coming year, Mark! Again, a fine blend of artificiality with nature, which you are so adept at. And, coupled with your poignant, heartfelt caption, makes this a real winner for the season. Glad your friend is better; he sounds like he was in dire straits and hanging on for dear life. Plus, when you mentioned the word, silliness, I immediately thought of that abomination for the future, Obamacare. But I digress. Let me close this comment with a very Happy New Year to you, my friend.

Lots of rooftops to sing from in this delightful photo. I vote for 'silliness and creating with insane abandon, joy, and wild love, in the New Year. Hope your New Year is filled with childlike wonder and joy, Mark, and so glad to hear your friend is recovering.

Beautiful image. I just love those old homes. I love the pov too. I think many would try to avoid that lamp post, but you have it front and center.. it worked beautifully. I am glad your friend will be alright.. that is scary when people get so ill. Happy New Year!

And the happiest of New Years to you too Mark. Hope your health is continuing to return and that you don't have to venture out into the current spate of frigid weather. (-9 right now in Chicago as I am writing this at midnight!) I saw this posting the other day and am just getting back to comment. The most fascinating bit for me is the nine panes of glass in the upper sash of the visible window mimicked perfectly in the outdoor light. Very eye-catching.
