Description

Happy Birthday Mike and many more in the years ahead. This is a millipede and most millipedes have very elongated cylindrical bodies with more than 20 segments. The name millipede is a compound word formed from the Latin roots mille (thousand) and pes (foot). Despite their name, no known millipede has 1,000 legs, although there is a rare species that has up to 750 legs. Common species have between 36 and 400 legs. Most millipedes are slow-moving and eat decaying leaves and other dead plant matter. However, they can also be minor garden pests, especially in greenhouses where they can cause severe damage to emergent seedlings. Millipedes range from 0.079 to 11 inches (2 to 280 mm) in length. This one was about 2.5 inches (6.35 cm). They are well known for curling into a defensive position. This specimen is an Anadenobolus MonilicornisIts. Most information from Wikipedia. Yes, that is my hand again! Do zoom. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favorites and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

A centipede has 1 pair of legs per segment and a millipede has two pairs of legs per segment, but you are right about the myth :) a lovely shot Dana
