Description
The coconut palm is the only accepted species in the genus Cocos. The term coconut can refer to the entire coconut palm, the seed, or the fruit, which, botanically, is a drupe, not a true nut. Palms can grow up to 98 feet (30 meters) with pinnate leaves from 13 to 20 feet (4 to 6 meters) long. Old leaves turn brown and break away cleanly, leaving the trunk smooth. On very fertile land, a tall coconut palm tree can yield up to 75 fruits per year, but more often yields less than 30, mainly due to poor cultural practices. A full sized coconut weighs about 3.2 pounds (1.44 kg). The coconuts in this photo have their outer husk layer (the exocarp) while most coconuts are sold in shops with the exocarp removed and you only see the mesocarp which is composed of a fiber called coir. beautiful tree and young cocnut. I seen so many in the Philippines, but I never cared for coconut water

this is cool. I saw one fall and hit a outdoor lawn chair and it made that chair jump. I heard of a dog falling a sleep under one and a coconut hit it in the head and killed it instant. I saw some down in Mexico and they told me the only palm tree to with stand a hurricane was a royal palm. The others will fall over all the time but a royal pale did not fall over.

WOW - that is a whole lot ! a rich harvest indeed and I think time has come ... I have never seen them that close-up altogether, like here ! There is nothing about the Coconut, which I don't like - I use it a lot in my cooking, baking etc. - marvellous presentation Dana, BB

I don't know if this is really true,but I heard that more people die from getting hit by falling coconuts than shark attacks. A fine photo of this tree and the fruits.

We get a lot of shark bites each year but not that many deaths in Florida but I could not find any stats on coconut deaths. I can tell you that there are palm trees everywhere down here. Our property has 15 palms but we cut off the seeds before they start to mature into coconuts.

Wow, now that is a lot of coconuts! Amazing how something that looks like that, is one of a lot of people's favorite fruit. And the way that so many things are made from the coconut has always amazed me. My favorite are the wide coconut shavings that are very lightly toasted. They are such a good snack and I get them at the Market right down from my house. Funny how something that simple from our childhood, can still stick with us to this day. I love everything about coconuts, particularly good quality (hard to get) coconut syrup! An amazing taste sensation. At most popular resorts they now hire people to climb the palms and knock off the nuts well before they can fall and kill someone. Great shot Dana!
