Description

This is a sculpture entitled "Lookout Tree" that's made entirely out out of willow saplings. It's integrated with the trees around it & you can walk into it & sit on a bench inside. It was constructed over a period of three weeks by an artist named Patrick Dougherty, who has built over a hundred such sculptures out of tree materials all over the world. It's located in Turtle Bay Exploration Park, which is a museum complex in Redding, California that interprets the relationship between humans and nature. I took this photo a few years ago. In an attempt to free up some hard drive space, I've been going over about 10 years worth of photos & deleting an awful lot of them. Unfortunately, it's not really making much of a dent in my disk usage, but on the plus side I've found a bunch of photos that I think may be worth sharing. This photo was a little overexposed & though it wasn't shot in RAW, I used the Camera Raw Filter on it & thought it worked pretty well... Please zoom.

What an inspiration! You cover that with cob and it could be livable and weatherproof once you paint it. I gotta check this cheap housing alternative out!

What a great find!! I tend not to delete anything anymore as I offten regret it later. As external hard drives are so cheap nowadays I just buy a new one.

What a marvelous structure! Willow saplings are great for building materials, and quite plentiful too. Great find in your archives!

Wow, at first glance I thought these were a couple of obese Bigfoot guys standing under a tree to avoid sunstroke. A fine capture of something rather unique.

I've not heard of the artist---which means little, believe me---but his work reminds me of Andy Goldsworthy, who also makes art out of the nature around him. (There's a film on him called "Rivers and Tides," where you see him make art out of leaves, ice on water, and so on.) I love the idea, and this piece has a real sway and beauty. It looks like two big animal heads facing the ground, feeding. It has a gentleness too, for all its mass, like big soft beasts. I appreciate your sharing it with us. As for the photo itself, it's a tough subject to begin with, because of the mass mixed with all that linear detail, and because of the strongly contrasted light and shadow. I can see some overexposure (something I've dealt with alot in my photography), but you still have a strong sense of light and shadow, dramatic sweep, and lots of energy esp in the right-hand sculpture. You tackled it, rather than just shot it. I think this kind of sight demands a commitment, and your commitment is very present here. Glad you saved it, and glad you shared it, both for the art and for the photo. (Btw, when I return to a gallery after an absence, it's always hard to choose 'representative' samples. And with a gallery as full as yours, I leave out more than I choose. So just know that I'm choosing representatively only: These are just some of my favorites, not all, by any means.)

I love this natural art and I can see the 2 faces - well done by Patrick Dougherty - nicely caught by yourself!
