Description

Hello again, hope you have had a nice weekend! This here is ALGECIRAS, situated directly at the Street of Gibraltar and the Bay of Algeciras, direct opposite of the british crown colony. Algeciras is a very important strategic point, it controls the Street of Gibraltar since 2000 years. Morroco is only 18 miles away, and the harbour of Algeciras very busy. The big tankship routes from Middle East end here and Algeciras is surrounded by large petrochemical complexes which produce all oil and gas for Spain today. Algeciras is connected with Morocco through several ferrylines to Tanger and Ceuta, the spanish exclave in Africa. A steady growing stream of persons and freight goes from Europe to africa and back and there exist plans to connect both continents through a large bridge. This is a historical place: Here in the bay of algeciras began in 711 the arabic/moorish invasion of Spain that lasted nearly 800 years. So Algeciras became the oldest moorish settlement in Spain, but is several centuries older. The old medina of Algeciras is gone forever, recent it is a place of archeological interest. Only a few walls and relicts survived. This old part of Algeciras is home of three famous Flamenco guitarists, the De LUCIA brothers. The most famous of all is the oldest, PACO DE LUCIA, master flamenco guitarist. Hope you enjoy this theme. Tomorrow we will begin to stroll around here for a while. Thanks for your interest and your comments. Please feel free to send some, they are always welcome. billcody

A lovely photo of the two streets coming together. I like the cobblestone streets and the beautiful tile work on top and around the door of the center building!
