Description
...according to 62guy!
An image of aircraft that by conventional aerospace engineer thinking...should not fly! The B-52 has too many engines which
introduces complexity into the maintenance equation. The B-2 Spirit has no tail at all, much less a V tail! Now my concept may or may not work, may or may not be economical...but hopefully, you get my point which is expanded on by the commentary below:
I post this aircraft again because it was apparently so praiseworthy...er, criticize worthy that 62guy became one of the very few people in these galleries to do something I rarely see here. Criticism. I don't even see much constructive criticism here. It's always very polite praise and that's cool. Personally, I think a little more constructive criticism would be a good thing and on that note, 62guy had the right idea, that is if I had posted inaccurate technical information to better judge the image from.
The problem was...I posted it in a Works In Progress (WIP) gallery, and did so for a reason! I was about to post in the transportation gallery when I realized that it was a quicky model I did without thinking too much about aircraft design parameters and such. That was the reason for not posting engine thrust or other design parameters. I even said in my post that it needed some refinement! Even if I had posted in the transpo gallery, I still am not saying it's an actual workable concept. I don't know for sure it is, but it's an image
and as such, I posted it here.
But most importantly, the concept is not even intended as a possible earthly design. It was an idea for a design that could be from human like aliens on an earthlike world. Of course 62 guy could not know this. I don't criticize because I realize this is not a place where I expect to see reality only. Most art is not about reality and I do not even consider myself an artist. I'm more a graphics or conceptual guy. If I didn't know this gallery is about art above all else, I would have long criticised the current trends towards boxy jet designs, unflyable steampunk concepts, robots looking through binoculars, spacecraft loaded with panels and doo dads...that I
so often see here, and in movies.
I guess it just seems ironic that I post a WIP and get an aeronautical critical analysis while others post superheroes they did not originate and get heaps of praise for originality. Sure the situations or stories they put their supermen or Jokers in are their own, but many of the characters are not...and that's fine. To each their own. Even I posted the creature from the black lagoon here a couple of times, and that's not a character I originated.
I could have conceptualized yet another 3 engine design because aircraft manufacturers do it that way (Okay, the A-380 is an exception)...but why reinvent their wheel? A conventional aircraft designer would tell me this if for example, I had come up with those concepts before they were publically unveiled. But they do fly because the aeronautical industry thankfully looks at what cannot currently be done and sets
out to find workable new ways to do it! Even I thought the F-117 didn't look like a flyable design without the help of unobtanium when I first saw it! The B-2 has no V-tail, no obviously visible elevator of any kind at all, but it flies!
I would have understood 62guys criticism if I had claimed my concept to be a realistic, or if I said I was an aerospace engineer. But I'm not claiming this.
The moral of this story if there is one...don't judge a single image of a concept in a WIP that isn't even accompanied by performance data of any kind. So here once again, I post my WIP that I said needs refinement, has engines too powerful for the small fuselage despite me not mentioning thrust, has too many engines despite the B-47 and B-52 having 6 and 8 engines respectively...whew!
The B-2 and F-117 are Poser and web models respectively. The B-52H is another of my WIPs.

As an artist, former technical illustrator and graphic artist, aviation enthusiast, and an almost aeronautical engineer, I hear what you are saying on several levels. Mostly though I think you should remember everyone here does not see the galleries in exactly the same way as you or I or anyone else for that matter. Like you, I get some strange remarks and comments from people that make me chringe and wonder where that comment came from and the purpose the poster had in mind. Your rant was well warranted and understandable. Learn to live with these periodic annoyances and keep doing what you love doing. I for one enjoy your work and if need be I will be the first to critique it (properly) with respect to the artist. Loved your outburst, it shows you care.

Thanks, and I did it more because I'd been wanting to say something about what appeared to me to be a general lack of constructive criticism more than anything. Not to say criticism should be going on all the time. Only when it's warranted. Again thanks, glad you understood, I wasn't sure how it would come across.

I know the render was a WIP, which, to me, implied you wanted feedback. My comments were from a real world commercial design perspective, not from a military one. Your rant is fine, but the points I made are still valid, given my understanding that you were showing a preliminary design for a commercial aircraft. There was no way for me to know it was for a fantasy world where real world economics (and government bureaucrats) don't apply.

Thats fine, its just that WIP to me means your image is progressing. Usually when someone wants commentary in a WIP, they ask for it. However, I see your point also in that by posting it in a WIP gallery, it implied my wanting feedback. But in this case, I wasn't really looking for that. The original design has a delta wing believe it or not! And of course, I did note in my commentary that you had no way of knowing what the concept was for. As far as commercial design standpoint, it is meant to be a commercial jet and is supposed to have some reality to it regardless of what world it occupies. Because todays designs tend to be ultra conservative, I wanted to be a bit more radical. In any case, no hard feelings.
