Description

We left the area where Jock lives this morning, and travelled to visit friends in Livingston, Louisiana. On the way we crossed over the Atchafalaya Swamp. Our friends promise us a closer look while we're here. They tell me it's pronounced a-CHA'-fa-lie'-a. Glad they told me right away, 'cause I had it wrong! LOL! Driving across I-10 out of Baton Rouge, the road is bumpy in a sort of quick-march 4/4 beat. Lots of trucks, lots of road noise, lots of vibration and jarring. In contrast, the road across the Atchafalaya is all elevated. The joints between sections of concrete are pretty far apart, and the road surface is good. It feels more like a floating waltz than a vigorous march. The speed limit drops from 70 to 60, and 55 for trucks. What a peaceful, quiet experience it was driving through that area. Even at 60 miles per hour, life seemed to slow down. Everything was quiet. It's mostly trees and bogs with very little open water, so this isn't very representative of what we saw, but it has the FEEL of what we saw, if that makes any sense. It's a beautiful place!

I'm glad you provided that pronunciation, Tara..... I was about to say "Gesundheit..." That's quite a spectacular shot, my dear friend! I love the sweeping feel here!

the water is high at this time of year. lot of rain. anyway if your friends can go there and rent a boat and go looking around. you can rent an air boat. ask him to bring you to the house boats out there. some will blow your mind. I posted some a few years[ like 5 or 6 years ago ] . Some have toilets on the outside. never saw them used but you can guess lol. page 78 in my gallery I have some.

Together with your words you have conveyed 'serene'! It's good to see a swamp that is meant to be there: much of Somerset here is like this at present and is usually farmland.

This is very beautiful Tara and so much like the Somerset levels at the moment. Also love your narrative.

Your description of this place is very well done. I almost feel like I am floating along the highway with you. thanks for sharing the beauty you see as well as explaining how to pronounce the name of the swamp.

I love the silence of large bodies of water... I just feel for all those waterlogged roots, but the trees seem healthy enough.

A surreal landscape - you don't usually expect trees to be growing in water. The closest I've been to a similar environment was traveling through the Everglades in Florida in an air boat...

Surreal indeed; I can almost smell that swampy atmosphere. I hope the mosquitoes aren't out yet. Eerie and lovely capture!

It looks real pretty, as long as you look at it from the safety of inside your car, on top of a bridge, in a photograph. Could you just imagine how many snakes and gators are down there.

beautiful in mood, hue, sheen and composition. Your 2/3's water and 1/3 sky is perfect for the expanse of these beautiful low water regions, swamplands, etc. You've done this so that the tree tops all stay at or below the horizon, and that's another fine choice for the feel of this place. I'd love to see this large...And the sky has surprising mixes of pink and lighter blues painted into each other with a watercolorist's brush. Very moody and fine, a quiet sweeping capture of this very beautiful place.
