Amidst images which often sentimentalize national symbols, even make them crass, etc, your national symbols become not only highly articulate, but sensual and flowing, and filled with native sensibilities. Embracing the people who were here before we landed (a whole america). The eagle and the feather-collections behind him, and the feathers below him, are done with crystal clarity, in line and hue. You've used waves of feathers to "couch" the eagle in the dream-catcher circle---I love that. He's packed in there by his own beauty. And the contrasts of hues in the feathers on the outside of the circle is most striking. You even have a miniature eagle in the bead medallion under the circle. The flag, in this case, is part of the undulating background, and that background blue undulates like sand dunes or ocean waves or silk---like an extension of the flag's fabric itself. You've mixed the stars into the eagles "mane" subtly, delicately. (Again, these symbols can be applied very heavy-handedly, but aren't here.) And the eagle's gaze---which is the real "ground" of the image, even though there is no physical ground---is fierce, and takes us to it as the center of the piece. I realized that you often don't have a physical ground: That your ground levels are often a canyon of spirit, shadow and emerging light. But your ground is actually way up in the subject of the image itself---that's where we feel the "terra firma" of a number of your images. And from the spirit point of view, that's how it should be: The solid emanates out of the inner or energy, etc. And the very centered composition is broken up by waves that flow around and through the circle....A very sensual striking treatment of your subject material; and I wish a lot more american symbols were treated this way, rather than the way they're often treated. Beautiful and sensual work, once more, Carol.

Thanks so much for your great comment, Mark. As always, you are so perceptive. You are right, the eagle is the 'ground' in this image, flying proud and fierce with the American flag. And the feathers are a frame of softness, bold and yet mirroring the intensity of colors. I'm so glad you like this as I was quite pleased with how it came out.
