Description
Venice. The Frari’s Basilica. Counter-facade. Monument dedicated to Pietro Lombardo. On the right of the entrance doorway, there is the elegant monument in Istrian stone and “pavonazzetto” which was built on commission of the senator Pietro Bernardo (+1538) while he was still alive. This was one of the late works of Tullio Lombardo (1424). The lower part is composed of a triple urn with bas-reliefs which represent Adam and Eve, an eagle and other ornaments. The head of the Medusa is intriguing. The upper part was added in 1558 by his sons Girolamo and Lorenzo and represents the kneeling senator who is presented by his patron St. Peter to the Redemptor.
