Description
So, here is the little trouble maker. He was blown out of the tree last week. He is about 2 weeks too early to get out of the nest. They usually get out of the nest and sit around on branches while mom and dad feed them. Great Horned owls need to stay with their parents well into the fall. They have to learn a lot. In nature, the smarter the animal, the longer they stay with mom. That is because they learn thru watching mom and dad. I am trying very hard to keep the little guy with mom in his new basket we put in the tree. I will make sure tomorrow that he is still being fed. If the parents stop taking care of him, I will have no choice put to take him. I don't want to as he will not ever be releasable. He would be worked with and imprinted to be used in education. Good but not where he belongs.. This and the next post are my favorites this year so far.

Those feet!

Glad you noticed the feet. Great horned owls have feet that they have to grow into. When I first saw him I thought he was a barred owl. Then I got a look at the feet and There was no question !! People often are afraid of the beak and the clacking noise. The beak can take a chunk out but those feet can crush every bone in your hand when they Are only half grown.

It is so wonderful that you do what is best for the wildlife. Most people want to take the animals so they can say they "saved" them when it is always best to leave them in the wild when you can. It has been such an honor to get to know krittermom and learn from her as a trainee. Since i am a "Krittermom in training", my son's friend called me about this baby owl. If it was not for Krittermom, that baby would have been confined to a cage for its entire life. She found the mom and bought a basket "nest". She hauled a huge ladder through the woods and hung that basket in the tree where the mom was sitting. Unbelievable!
