Description

A subalpine stand of pure Limber Pines is worn down by the harsh prevailing winds near Whirlpool Point. I just really like the rough textures of this place. I have been to it a few times during the summer but this was my first winter visit. Life is tough on the edge of existence.

It looks rough indeed, but I love the textures. I would have thought there would be more snow, but maybe on the hillside it blows away?

This landscape certainly has a primordial feel to it - almost alien, in fact. I wouldn't want to have to spend a winter's night here, but it is beautiful. A great capture, Roxy - you've really brought out its desolate beauty.

does look like rough landscape, Roxy. really enjoy your photo series of things. trees are similar in our garden of the gods area. i have a photo i took 35 + years ago of a view and went back about 9 year ago and took the shot from same place, there was a tree growing out of the rock area, had not grown more then a few inches it seemed.

Wow Roxie, this really is an amazing capture you shared with us today. This is a lot like the trees in my area looked after the ice storm we had a few years back.

Life finds a way even in the harshest environments, don't forget to send us a photo the next time you're on Europa... :)

the question is then - is it survival or living? Great capture of this area and its denizens!

I love this type of terrain – I would expect to see lodgepole at high altitude. It looks like it recently got dusted with snow!

Lodgepole Pines were on the other side of the ridge, also forming pure stands. And just above this bowl the whitebark pines took over.

Thats a good shot! I can quite relate to the feeling of awe such places inspire and make a person feel their small size in relation to nature again.

Reminds me of some of the places I use to hike. Beautiful scene.

Rough textures indeed, though the whiteness of the snow provides somewhat of a counter balance. Fine shot...

Gorgeous textures in this one, I have to agree. And there is such a real sense of loneliness too about this shot. You've not only captured the beauty of the natural setting but a great spirit about it too. Beautiful! :)
