Description

I've got some pictures in my files left over from our trip last year that somehow never got posted, so I'm going through and clearing stuff out. This is a limestone fence in the Flint Hills of Kansas. It's at the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve outside of Strong City. (If you're interested, you can look that up on a map. There's nothing closer!) The fence is made of stacked bits of what used to be the floor of a relatively shallow inland sea that stretched from what is now Texas, all through the prairie, and up into what is now Canada. Makes an attractive and sturdy fence, doesn't it?

I could have sworn this was Dorset if you hadn't said otherwise! We have lots of drystone walls here and indeed all over Britain where limestone and other suitable stone is to be found. This makes me feel very at home!

I love this type of fencing; not sure how practical it would be in earthquake country, but still, I just love the look of it, especially in England where they go for miles across the countryside! Wonderful find and lovely shot!

Strange how you call this a fence, to us it's a wall. Oh well never mind. Cool capture.

We have a trhee stone high border around landscaped areas of our back yard. The stones came from a quarry in the Flint hills. We hand picked and loaded each of them into a Dodge 4x4 I used to have.

At casual glance it's just a wall. But think of the workmanship and craft that went in to making it. Beautiful.

Superb composition. It leads the eye right to that wonderful old tree which, in turn, frames the landscape in the distance. Great work.

I have attempted to stack stones into some semblance of order before....sadly it is not a skill I have yet mastered. Whoever made this fence had it down though. Thank you for sharing the photo with it great POV and interesting mini history lesson.

This is a very well made dry stone wall and could be any where in the UK. Very nice shot.

You can post old shots anytime, I'm sure you have all kinds of beauties sitting in your folders. When you wrote, "The fence is made of stacked bits of what used to be..." I thought I read "The fence is made of stacked bits of wheat---" Wheat! I thought, you've gotta be kidding! They made that sucker out of wheat??? Anyway, it's part of the ancient sea---that's much better. Big jutting composition, it cuts right into us; and yet the shot is gentle and soft, somehow: The background is soft, the tree is soft, the light is soft and even a bit moody. A fine contrast for the fence, which boldly comes right at us. It must be stunning to see it sitting there, in that slow bucolic setting---a clearly human-made edifice in the middle of the Kansas fields...Very nice work, Tara. And thoughtfully cropped and seen.

I love these natural stone fences - I'll bet it took a good long time to build that fence - unless they had help from aliens, of course.... :-D I love traveling through the Flint Hills - I hope to take a weekend trip to Konza Prairie this year.
