Description
Venice. The Frari’s Basilica. Reliquary. It is a magnificent work of the German-Bohemian area. Bronze, early XIV century gothic.
The base is engraved with small floral decoration and in the center there are two shutters with quadrilobe motives. The temple-shaped reliquary is surmounted by a few spires, on top of which we notice a few XVIII century statuettes. The central-external part of the reliquary is dotted and it shows twelve male characters of the New Testament many of which are unrecognizable as time partially erosed them. In its central-internal part there are two angels, shaped with great ability, in a preying attitude. Between the two angels there is a fragment of a reliquary where once was kept an important relic. The shutters are decorated with a double order of bright coloured enamels outlined with great precision and reminding the technique of Limoges; on the left shutter we find: St. James, St. Jerome, St. Peter, St. Magdalene, St. Catharine and St. Elizabeth of Hungary. On the right shutter we can notice St. Andrew, a saint holding a jaw-bone, St. Henry duke of Bavaria and emperor of Germany, St. Margaret, St. Agnes and St. Barbara.
