Hi, I'm Andrea, and I'm interested in creatures and plants both wild and tamed, and people of all sorts. I only use a compact digital camera ,as I love being able to get it into a back pocket, and not have to cart heavy kit about. I carry a Panasonic Lumix TZ series, binoculars and a hand lens almost everywhere. Most of my outings are with the dogs so I only use point and shoot.
I am getting the hang of Photoshop, thanks to some very kind folk on RR!Â
I have a wildlife garden in Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, and spend a lot of time there . I retired from teaching art to teenagers a while ago.
I'm now getting some good results with my digi compacts; it took me a while to make the switch from my old film camera, an 1960 ish Pentax Spotmatic, but the mistakes are much cheaper! Â
I have 4 lodgers, 3 dogs and a parrot who, as at 2017, I have had 40 years.
I has so far had 19 dogs, mostly rescues.

This is a really great capture, I like the observation you make here and the title is perfect... over many summers in past years I have watched herons fishing along the River Umber as there are many trout in the crystal clear waters and the river is at the lowest level at that time of year. they are first class at fishing and the golf not far away, not often would get this image side by side. Well done.

A superb capture. I also like your explanation.

every one his layer... perfect seen and done, and yes herons likes the mood of a good golf green;-)

this is a great photo and you cropped the other like I would have done

HA! It seems the heron doesnt care. I hope it can still catch fish there. :) Lovely shot.

GREAT CREATION WELL SEEN

Cool ambiance and textures in this shot snapped along the Thames. The heron/egret stands proudly erect and well hidden from the golfers as it surveys its environs, A.

Excellent capture of the sporting scenes.

Golf and fishing, two honourable pursuits; I know which one I'd prefer. Fantastic capture!

Oh, I do like this one! I generally don't have that much of a preference, but the golfers and their bags spaced so beautifully are such a wonderful counterpoint to the heron. Oblivious to each other, occupying the same general space. Very nice. A social commentary and a nicely composed picture all at once! :)

The Thames? The Thames? :-) Can you tell I like to read through the comments of others? Like your selection of subject material in this photo...has more oomph then a pretty heron by itself IMHO.

Brilliant photo!!

"Golf and fishing, two honourable pursuits; I know which one I'd prefer" My lady is lethal with a nine iron LOL!

I would have cropped the golfers out. Not fond of the game and don't quite understand what the point is, but then each to his own (: a lovely image never the less .. the golfers so involved in whacking that ball around they miss the beauty so close by.

I'd rather be fishing with the Heron.

Great capture of this pretty bird.

Lol, Rita. If you don't like golf, you really don't like golf! (Golf haters are a fierce bunch, and I can understand their feelings.) But the addition of the players and their bags adds a whole other dimension to the shot. It's a real slice-of-life shot, not just because those players and their bags are like dissociated accents up there---all spread out and disconnected---but because they echo the other spread out accents in the trees, the fence posts, and the condensed accents of all those rocks behind the metal fence. I have no idea what those rocks are there for, but I love the play they make with the rest of the shot. And at the bottom of it all---a lone bird, and a tall beautiful one too. I agree, it's a great study in juxtaposition. With the water rushing down below it all... (There was a Fawlty Towers episode where Basil and his wife are about to play golf. And Basil ((Cleese)) is wearing the most outlandish golf outfit, with an equally outlandish cap. And his wife says, "are you REEEALLLLY going to wear that outfit???" And Cleese says, "it's called 'style', dear..." That kind of sums up my feelings about traditional golf wear. Although in the States, we have jersey knit shirts and banlon socks. And saddle shoes. I'd love to see biblical prophets in those outfits. Anyway, I love how they're little accents here...)

A beautiful Heron and capture - surprised that s/he would chose to 'fish' in such fast water!
