Description

With spring we have the arrival of our most beautiful ducks. These are wood ducks. I am fortunate that one of the doctors I work with has this pond. He has allowed me to come and take pictures this year. I hope to catch the chicks, but these guys are very elusive. The doctor has set up a blind for me to use. I go out at 5:30am (otherwise known as O dark thirty) and wait for then to show. Rule number one--wear water proof shoes. My toes are still thawing out ! I have waited many years to take pictures of these ducks. Cold feet or not, I am having a blast ! Thank you Dr.Montgomery.

I love wood ducks. The males are so beautifully painted, they don't even look real! I never would have believed they existed in nature if I hadn't seen them myself. We spent some time a few weeks ago at the Aransas Wildlife Preserve on the Texas coast, and got each of our three grandsons an Audubon plushie bird complete with bird call inside. One of them will be getting a wood duck. :)

At first I thought you meant a duck made of wood, but on closer inspection and reading your comment I saw the feathers and grasped that wood duck was the species name. THEN I suddenly remembered reading about them in 1958 in school! Well, that laugh was on me! The new camera has a very good lens - it catches things beautifully no matter what the distance. I'm so glad you have it! :-)
