Hi, I'm Andrea, and I'm interested in creatures and plants both wild and tamed, and people of all sorts. I only use a compact digital camera ,as I love being able to get it into a back pocket, and not have to cart heavy kit about. I carry a Panasonic Lumix TZ series, binoculars and a hand lens almost everywhere. Most of my outings are with the dogs so I only use point and shoot.
I am getting the hang of Photoshop, thanks to some very kind folk on RR!Â
I have a wildlife garden in Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, and spend a lot of time there . I retired from teaching art to teenagers a while ago.
I'm now getting some good results with my digi compacts; it took me a while to make the switch from my old film camera, an 1960 ish Pentax Spotmatic, but the mistakes are much cheaper! Â
I have 4 lodgers, 3 dogs and a parrot who, as at 2017, I have had 40 years.
I has so far had 19 dogs, mostly rescues.

Both versions are very well done

Great color, detail and overall ambiance in this portrait of Postman Peter, Andrea, pondering back to the good olde days of delivering mail, the sound of barking dogs still resonating in his ears.

I like both versions very much. He has a good face, and I like the faraway look in his eyes. A wonderful portrait!

Your photos of Peter reveal a great deal of character. You've got the knack:)

You do have a gift of getting the best out of people when you capture them, I like both versions of this shot, being a postman I'm sure he has more than enough experience to deal with all dog scenarios... how often do we give credit to our postmen and women?.. they bring our letters and parcels come rain or shine through all seasons.... without them our lives would not be the same.

Very very very wonderful portrait !!!!

A strong face full of character. The post work is brilliant as is the black and white image. Mine is a post woman. I should try and get a picture of her.

A man of many letters after his name. He looks full of anguish, I hope he is alright.

He doesnt look very happy. IN our area, the post people always bring a little Dog Biscuits and they say, they have never troubles with dogs and I know Magnus happily ran to the driveway to get his part. If the postman came to the door with a package, Magnus was always friendly. But barking to tell a humen arrived.

Fantastic portrait!

You do the best portraits, If I were looking to have a portrait done, I'd hire you in a heartbeat.

Your flickr version is quite intense, almost brooding. Strong, intense work. This is warmer (because of the hues, and a greater amount of light). And painterly. As a portrait, I agree with Bill and others, you have the "knack". A fine thoughtful portrait, his head tilted slightly, with a very pensive look on his face. You get these unnamable emotions in your portraits: They're always so clear but just so hard to describe. I love his hand on his shoulder, and the flow and crumple of his shirt and sweater. And it's all encased in that high chair---your crop (like on the birds' nest) encases him, and makes this feel intimate, enclosed. A very sensitive portrait, Andrea, more of your long and wonderful series.

I like both versions my friend but sort of lean towards the painterly version. I like the ruddy coloring! Dogs and postmen don't blend together over here either!
