Description

A rose named Violette so lovely in purples and pinks bathed in sunlight and a perfumed mist made sweeter by a hummingbird's kiss. A Rose Named Violette prose by Carol Cavalaris © Credits: Another in my Brigitte's Roses Collection, featuring the richly colored and voluptuous rose called 'Violette'. Brigitte told me this rose was bred in France in 1921, and only blooms once per season, and for only three weeks. Created in Photoshop, using rose photo reference, modified hummers by jaguarwoman, and painting techniques. Special thanks to Brigitte for the use of her beautiful rose photo. Another painting where the flowers (and birds) are the 'ground'. The three hummingbirds give sharp linear contrasts to the flowers---this is definitely about them as much as about the flowers---and they also bring a circular motion to the piece: I love how you have the lower-left bird pointing into the upper right bird, creating a motion around the flowers. You also have un-bloomed buds---I count 3 that stand out---and they make beautiful contrast to the open petals. Lots of contrast here...I think it's safe to say that, in any art, working with "same" things, same subjects, same themes, same textures, etc, is a challenge: Because you don't have the given contrasts that you get with hummingbirds on flowers...you have to make the contrasts from within the subject itself: So your last two flower paintings---not counting the butterfly---produce all their contrasts within the flowers themselves, or within the backgrounds, etc. That takes skill and real vision. But here, the birds and buds offer immediate contrast, and so the center is like a hub where many things 'gather'. The blues and greens on the birds are sumptuous, beautifully contrasting the deep purples in the petals. Also, the stamen areas get very intense: In the bottom one, you have a whole world going on down there. And your highlights on the flowers are dramatic too: In the left-most flower, your whites are beethoven-like. And the center is surrounded by a marine-like 'ocean', filled with petal-forms broken up by deep waters... These are very chakric, these centered flower pieces: Because of how much you've coagulated in the centers, and because of how much they radiate outwards. Very musical, almost operatic, and swimming in soulful purples. A very sumptuous piece, Carol.
