Description

One of the many freighters we saw heading out to sea on the Columbia River in Astoria, Oregon. I'm still in awe at how huge this river is. Our hotel's window looked out at the mouth of the river and we watched boat after boat coming in over the bar. It's a dangerous crossing and back in the day when ships weren't as big or powerful, many were lost.

It's four miles across at Astoria. Everybody down here thinks I'm weird, that I think the Mississippi isn't very impressive. LOL!

Crossed it in 1999. I can still remember being amazed. Our local crossing of the Chesapeake Bay is 4.3 miles IIRC but it does not seem as impressive as this span's locale.

Yeah that river's huge. Immense. Tara's comment on the Mississippi says it---the Mississippi's a big river, but it doesn't have the feel of this monster. (The Mississippi has a ton of lore via New Orleans, the Delta, Mark Twain and a lot of other stuff; but size-wise, it's a creek compared to this thing.) The ship and the bridge going off to an angle behind the ship give this a real sense of size. And there's nothing else in the shot---except maybe a few patches of land back there; but they're very small in the shot---and that makes it seem like the ship is surrounded by a vast sea. You're making the Columbia feel reeeeeeallllly good about itself. Really nice shot, Marilyn.
