Description

I really have to love some of the modeling tools they make available now. I hate doing UV Maps, but Unfold3d really took a lot of the pain out of doing them. It isn't perfect, but when it comes to speed and reliable results in a short amount of time, I haven't found any one I like more. I do hate having to carry around a software key --you have to have a USB thumb drive to use it, but it does mean that I can install it the software on any number of machines and use it. I'm not locked into just one machine. I was able to UV this model of the shoe I'm making in about 10 minutes. The automatic unpack is better than anyone else I've tried including Headus UV layout, Roadkill, Zbrush(The only useful tool I've found in Zbrush UVing is being able to delete the UV and start over, aside from that it's hideous!) It's a little expensive ($415.00 roughly) But if you're doing a lot of UV work it can make the difference. The only problem I found so far was the lack of documentation, but there's a tutorial you can purchase from CGDreams.co.uk that really makes up for it. Until I found those tuts, I was pretty frustrated with not being able to find the information that I wanted. I know it sounds like a big plug, but I was really excited at how the UVs came out. Now if I can just get the hang of Quixel DDo, I'll be cooking with gas!

That seems to be a great tool. There must be a way to superpose similar island

It has a stack island function for multiple pieces that have the same topography. I haven't had occasion to use it, yet, but I'm certain it will come up sooner or later. What you see there in the picture was the default unwrap --I didn't have to do anything other than hit the unfold button and that's what came out. Nothing was moved or re-positioned, which was pretty sweet for small meshes like the ones that I'm working with now.

Fantastic work! And I greatly appreciate your information. UV mapping is a mystery to me right now. I have Hexagon 2 and Blacksmith3D at present, which both have tools for UV, but how good either one of them is with it is beyond my level of experience at present. Anyway, it's nice to know what's out there and what has worked for other people. Thanks for sharing your journey! :)
