Description

These three aircraft, in the center the P-38 'Lightning' representing World War II, the F-86 'Sabre' representing the Korean War, and the F-16 "Fighting Falcon' representing the Gulf War, the Iraq War, and the Afghanistan War were instrumental in bringing these wars to a successful conclusion. The Lockheed P-38 "Lightning' is a twin boom, twin engine, with a single, center nacelle cockpit. It has two 1,000 hp turbo-supercharged 12 cylinder Allison J-1710 engines fitted with counter-rotating propellers. The P-38 was the only aircraft produced throughout America's involvement in World War II. The P-38 was used in a number of roles, including dive-bombing, level-bombing, ground-attack night-fighting, and photo-reconnaissance. It was used in the Pacific; Europe; China-Burma- India Theater of Operations. On 18 April 1943 16 P-38G 'Lightning' were launched from Guadalcanal, flew 435 miles near sea level (to avoid radar detection) and intercepted and shot down near Bougainville two Japanese Mitsubishi G4M 'Betty' aircraft, one of which was carrying Japanese Admiral Yamamoto. The North American F-86 'Sabre' (to the left of the P-38) is a single seat, single engine transonic jet fighter aircraft, used as a fighter-interceptor and fighter-bomber. It was the United States first swept wing fighter. It was extensively used during the Korean War, and despite some shortcomings vis-a-vis the Russian built Mig-15 it had a much better kill ratio thanks to the superior skills of the American pilots. The General Dynamic F-16 'Fighting Falcon' was used in the Gulf War, during the Iraq War, the war in Afghanistan, and other military interventions It is scheduled to be slowly faced out. This picture was taken on 15 March 2014, Sig...

Now if you could have just been up there in a chase ship to get 'em from the air. Don't you and I just wish! Neat photo of three great aircraft. And where was this flyover? Pennsylvania, Phoenix, Reno?

@CarolusB. A really good question. I think the main reason they didn't have a Vietnam representation is that it cost a lot of money to maintain an F-4!
