Description

Another shot of madrone bark. This one shows a trail of holes left by woodpeckers. They drill holes like this in trees in search of insects & grubs, as well as sap, & have evolved several features that protect them from injury while drilling: "To prevent brain damage from the rapid and repeated impacts, woodpeckers have evolved a number of adaptations to protect the brain. These include small brain size, the orientation of the brain within the skull (which maximizes the area of contact between the brain and the skull) and the short duration of contact. The millisecond before contact with wood a thickened nictitating membrane closes, protecting the eye from flying debris. The nostrils are also protected; they are often slit-like and have special feathers to cover them." Please zoom for maximum detail.

Love the composition and texture, as well as the color variation and saturation. A wonderful landscape, and the explanation is fascinating!

Fascinating to see the results of all that pecking. Makes for a very colorful and artistic presentation.

Tons of lush color and texture in this bark shot, plus very interesting about the evolution protection provided the woodpeckers during their drilling activities.

I love seeing these patterns in nature; our neighborhood is full of flickers and woodpeckers, and there is always the sound of hammering up there! Fantastic closeup on their effects!

Another of your intensely alive closeups, filled with overlaying waves and holes and colonies, etc. Fascinating info on the woodpecker! I'd have never thought about it! I never thought about the constant concussion of their activity. You'd think that some bird would fly by and say, "there are easier ways of getting a meal!" But maybe for them, this is the easiest...But the image is the thing, and it's another of your flowing abstracts, with wonderful rich reds and browns, and all those "lava waves" flowing down the surface. A complete world, made of a slice; and it's beautiful Claude. You do this as well as anyone I've known or seen, and these images never, ever lose their potency. And it has 3 parts, kind of: The top, the flatter middle, and the bottom. And that middle is rich amber orange brown. Beautiful work.
