Description

An old barn that I've passed hundreds of times & finally got around to taking a photo of today. The property it's on is for sale - 67 acres that's been in the same family since 1857. Although locally owned family farms are rapidly disappearing & being replaced by big, greedy agricultural conglomerates, I'm proud to say that just today the results of a local election are that the growing of genetically modified crops has been banned in this county (Jackson County, Oregon). Despite the fact that Monsanto & other out of state companies poured over a million dollars into a deceitful campaign to defeat this initiative (& that's a lot for a local county election), the ban passed by an almost 2 to 1 margin. A small victory perhaps, but a very satisfying one & an important one for local organic farmers...

Such a beautiful scene. It would be a shame for this to be lost to agribusiness.

I worked with organic farmers in the 70s and 80s, before organic was taken over by big businesses (to make money), and corrupted. Those farmers worked their tails off, with humongous hours, and lots of driving to far locations to sell their produce; they were very, very devoted. It was painful to see how they were taken over by so many places, and how their work was demeaned. I'm very happy to know that elections, etc, are trying to turn things around, in your part of the world. On the pic...you do a lot of closeup work, and very lush long shots too. But every so often you do open and even desolate landscapes; and you bring out the electricity in them. This is an old tattered structure, but it has real dignity in this shot, and you've surrounded it with a glow of deep orange yellows and greens. And it's composed so the clouds move beautifully in-line with the rooftop: Really fine seeing, Claude. This has a feeling of a big field aglow, and a building built low to the ground that has withstood the tests of time. Very sensitively done. And broad and somehow very American in the most traditional sense. Those hues would make Van Gogh smile!

Congratulations on the outcome of your local election! I remember talking about it when we were there. That's a huge win for Jackson County, and for Oregon as well, as I recall. I like this barn, and the colors you've chosen. Beautiful!

A very different style barn design than I am used to in the New England area! A most excellent sky!
